With all the rain we've been having lately, the outdoor school isn't ridable. So were hacking out more than usual, but I wanted to focus on my very green horses schooling. How can include schooling whilst I hack?

If he doesn't know how to leg yield yet, you can teach him from on the ground whilst out on a hack. Or simply do groundwork with him, taking him past scary things, getting him used to everything you can think of. Puddles also are sometimes a pain for people, as their horses refuse to go through them. So if yours is the same take advantage of all ther ain and go puddle sploshing!!

You can practise transitions and practise getting them really accurate by picking somewhere you are going to trot for example at the next lampost and you are going to walk at the next tree. You can also practise exercises such as leg yield and shoulder in whilst you are walking along quiet country lanes. Another good exercise is to practise your horse through his neck to the left and the right. This will help to stretch and strengthen the muscles in your horse’s neck and help to improve his bend to the left and right equally.

You can practise your transitons especially your downwards ones! becasue you have to stop to let some traffic come by when you go on a road. Also, you can practise leg yielding when youre on a a really quiet road where no cars go by past. eg leg yeild onto the other side of the road and then back to the other side. Also, if you have any woods nearby, you could jump over a log and practise keeping dead straight, and stuff like that! you can actually do quite a lot of things providing it is safe to do. so..
