If he is a fidget then trying to make him stand still will only make him worse. The best thing is to use a bit of reverse psychology & make him move - backwards, sideways, anyway! just keep him moving until the only thing he wants to do is stand. Once he is standing reward him but make sure its your idea to move off again & build up the amount of time he stands for slowly. If you are consistent he will quickly learn.

If he's pulling you to move, then simply let the reins go slack and then he's got nothing to pull against, lots of people make this mistake and their horses think that because there is pressure on the rein, they are supposed to move somewhere. This may or may not be the case for your pony, but that would explain why he was fine once you get off! Hope that helps
