My 16.2hh Clydesdale x TB mare does everything I ask – until we get to a show. She seems to get ‘stage fright’ and hates leaving other horses.
I struggle to get her going, though she has jumped well at home and I carry a whip to back up my aids. How can I help her be more confident?

Experienced Rider and Trainer Carol Mailer replies:
If she goes well at home but not at a show, ask what you’re doing differently. Is it the show situation with other horses and a different atmosphere that’s to blame, or are you riding her differently? Are you tense and worried, or is she using the show as an excuse to be unco-operative? Here are some things you can try to help improve your show performance:
● At home, dress yourself and your horse in the gear you wear for shows, even down to the boots she wears.
● Go to a show but don’t compete, just concentrate on getting her to leave other horses when asked. Stay all day if necessary.
● Hire a venue and practise obedience away from home without the pressure of the show atmosphere.
● Establish a warm-up routine at home and use this when you’re at shows. Routine will give you both confidence.
● Ride the same at shows as you do at home.
