When I canter my 10-year-old on the left rein, he bucks for no reason. I don’t pull on his mouth and I’ve had his teeth checked.
His bucks are aggressive and not for fun. What should I do?

Instructor Jane Baker replies:
It sounds as though your horse could be in some discomfort along his back and that possibly his pelvis could be out of alignment. This causes many horses to buck when they’re asked to canter, due to the fact that they’re struggling to engage their hindquarters properly. The strike-off into canter requires a lot of propulsion –therefore, rather than put the effort in and suffer, they’ll buck.
I suggest that you have his back checked and check the fit of your saddle, too, as when you ask for canter it may be putting pressure on to a certain area, causing him discomfort.
