It's not a nice thing to have to go through, but unfortunately we tend to live longer than they do, so it's inevitable at some stage.
We had to have my daughters horse pts last year, and because he was suffering at the end (Cushings) it was kinder for him, but awful for us.
We already had another horse, my mare Bracken, and as we didn't want her to be on her own we quite quickly adopted a rescue horse.
He was ideal for what we wanted, but I didn't really bond very deeply with him, being more concerned about how Bracken was coping with her loss.
Nearly a year on, and I would say I have nearly as deep a bond with Monty (the new one) as I do with Bracken, but in a totally different way - Bracken is my one-in-a-lifetime-horse, but Monty has managed to worm his way into all our families hearts.
We got him quickly as we needed a companion, but that's not right for everyone - just take time, get over your initial grief and don't make any knee jerk reaction decisions that you'll regret later.
You'll know what to do and when to do it.
xx
