Really not sure where you stand with this... I loan my horse out atm & have given his loaner his passport so she can transport him, get the vet out, have him vaccinated & the like, however when I kept him at a livery yard the owner didn't like the idea of being responsible for people's passports if they went missing so asked for photocopies instead. In an ideal world we would all be able to trust each other not to run off with our horses & would have no qualms about giving loanees passports, but we don't live in an ideal world & the owner of this horse has obv heard a few horror stories.

To be honest if i loaned my boy out i wouldn't give the original passport out either and would only give a photocopy as he could be sold without my knowledge. soz

I have two ponies on loan, one with a full loan agreement in place, one came without a passport which was illegally sold to the owner without one. At my cost i have had him passported and microchipped( the owner is no longer in touch and really has just dumped my lovely boy with me) the vet said i would be legally entitled to ownership.

anyway you must legally have the full passport even if it is a loaned horse, a photocopy is not acceptable, if it is a good relationship with the owner she should give it to you( i regulary send dvd's and pics to one owner and i have the full passport and they dont live locally, it is a matter of trust on both parts.

Vets will ask for the orginal passport when you have the horse vaccinated or treated so must get it.
