I have been told by a friend that some new transport regulations that came into force last year apply when I transport my horse to the woods where I ride. Is this correct?

I think your friend is referring to The Welfare of Animals During Transport Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005, which came into force on 5 January 2007. The Regulations are aimed at improving the welfare of animals during transportation. They do not apply when you load your horse or pony to take him for a weekend hack. Nor do they apply when you take him to the vets. You do not say whether you compete or show your horse. If you do, and transport the horse yourself, then again the Regulations do not apply.
However, should you pay a haulier to transport your horse or pony to a show, even for pleasure, the haulier has to comply with the new Regulations.
