Mud fever is a painful infection of the skin and is caused by the bacterium Dermatophilus congolensis, which also causes rain scald. Thriving in damp, muddy conditions, it usually occurs on the heels and lower legs – those with feathers are more prone. Signs that a horse has mud fever include crusty scabs, hair loss, itchy sore skin, pain and swelling.
