you may find that it will be easier to treat if you do as it can be quite a messy as you have to soak the scaby area and then pick off the scabs, my pony has suffered from mud fever many times but the last time he had it we found this really good oinment to put around the area once the scabs have ben removed it is also water proof and lasts quite a long time it's called ' AROMAHEEL' IT'S ROUND ABOUT 12 -13 POUNDS BUT THE RESULT IS FANTASTIC IT STARTS TO CLEAR IN ONLY A FEW DAYS if you type it in on the internet you get a picture of it so that you have an idea of wha it looks like. If you have already treated your horses mud fever then you can get it just incase your horse gets it again because i have found that once they get it once they are prone to it but you don't have to clip your horses feet as i didn't mine it may just make it easier to treat but its up to you hope i helped if you need anything else just ask

You shouldnt cut off your horses legs, the feathers will add a little protection. You wash offf your horses legs and then clean and dry them throughly afterwards it really works.

I've recently had to do the same with Princess, and she doesn't really have any feathers as such! It just made it easier to hibiscrub and I thought I could do a better job at keeping it cleaner. Hers got really bad this year, but so far there's been no real sore bits, just bald patches! It's not helping that now Bertie has gone she waits out by the gate for me standing in all the mud! But I agree with Cocosmum and would say it def helps with the cleaning/treating :)
