My horse is rather on the fat side and, as she’s pigeon-toed, I worry about the pressure on her joints. She lives out with other horses on really good grazing all year round and hacks about four times a week. Should I restrict her grazing with a grazing muzzle?

YRC Advanced Instructor Alison Ritchie replies:
You’re right to worry. If she’s unsupervised, I’d restrict her intake by sectioning off part of the field rather than use a muzzle. Make sure she has a good view of the other horses. Use a weigh tape weekly, particularly if she gets fat on spring grass.
