I’ve had my 17-year-old Hackney x Welsh Cob since he was a youngster and he’s very much part of the family. Now I’m moving to southern Spain, and although I don’t want to part with him, it’s a very long way for him to travel and I don’t know if he would cope with the climate once there. Would it be kinder to sell him before we go?

The climate, forage and care of horses in Spain will be a big change for your horse. At 17 years, and being of native type, my personal feeling is to leave him where he is. This will be difficult for you emotionally, but better, to my mind, for the welfare of the horse. I’m sure you can find him a good, loving owner and visit him regularly.
