I’ve just bought a gorgeous four-year-old traditional coloured cob but, as I’ve only ever had Warmbloods before, I have no idea how to look after his hair and keep it intact for next year’s show season. Time is tight, so I don’t want to spend hours washing and drying him after work. Would a trace clip be a good idea?

He’ll definitely need a chaser or trace clip if he’s working to help him cool down. Keep his feathers intact as they will help protect his legs and heels from mud fever over the winter. Once spring comes they can be easily washed and brushed out.
Use a good New Zealand rug with a neck cover to help keep him clean when he’s turned out, and perhaps put plaits in his mane for short periods to keep it tangle-free (don’t roll them up). Avoid rug rubs by picking a well-fitting rug, and if his mane is rubbed, try sewing in a cotton, satin or sheepskin lining to help.
