Is it really healthier to leave horses barefoot?

The barefoot versus shoeing debate is very topical. There is certainly no need to shoe a horse just for the sake of it. If his hoof shape, horn quality, lifestyle, work regime and management will allow him to go unshod, then so be it. However, we have chosen to domesticate equines and impose an unnatural lifestyle on them, so in many cases they need the ‘unnatural’ protection and support of a shoe to help them compensate.
