Bonding with your horse or pony is, in my opinion, very important for a happy horse who is willing to work. Nothing feels better than you called your horses' name and he canters to you from the other end of the field.
Try lots and lots of grooming, pats, strokes, grooming, the occasional treat, kisses, anything you think your horse enjoys. It is worth trying to find his 'tickle spot' as they love nothing better than a good scratch. You could try walking out in the field with the headcollar in your hand, but calling him over and give him attention and a treat then walk away so he doesn't think he's going to work everytime you take the headcollar out. I started this with my pony and she now walks over to me wondering if she's about to do work or not.
You could bring him in and give him a good groom then take him back out again. Also, you could try teach him tricks like bowing ect to gain trust from him. You could look up all sorts of trick training videos on youtube, I did and found so many videos that helped.
I know I wrote loads but I hope this helped :)
