hiya - my mare would show diffeences in behaviour towards other horses, but towards people, nope - we never experienced a change in behaviour with her, so it's not just based on behaviour. yes, it's a noticeable occurence in some horses, but sonata's always a grumpy poo with me anyways so i didnt notice a change :p.
beckaroo has basically summed it up in a nutshell. mares can excrete what i cal 'seductive squirt' lol!!! of urine and mucus, which has a notable sweet smell to it, and if you take it upon yourself to feel your mare's hind legs or underneth her tail, it will be quite sticky. but the sweet smell can be detected at other times of the reproductive cycle, so is just one clue of her being in season.
