You can see my horse's ribs although it is well covered everywhere else (perhaps too well covered). He is 19, ridden regularly (mainly hacking). How can I improve his shape?

That is a good idea, but would be a 'false outline'.. better to teach him it with any bit. Lunging in a chambon, or riding in a de gouge does wonders on the shape of the horse!

Try your horse in a hanging cheek snaffle with a french link as this puts pressure on the poll, encouraging the horse to come onto the bit and make a better shape (a cheap way to acheive great results) www-saddlery-online.co.uk

can you get him to work in a correct outline and bend properly? That will do him good and help any horses shape. Also, try to get him to stretch down long and low before starting faster work and afterwards to keep him supple :)
