My gelding has developed a nasty habit of kicking, and he’s also difficult to lead out of the field, threatening to bite when I pull the leadrope. He’s been checked by the vet and physically he is OK, but recently he kicked me and broke my hand. The problems started after a new mare joined his herd of 10 horses, but the mare has since left.

As you’ve ruled out any physical issues, this does seem to be a behavioural problem. Sometimes, when horses spend a lot of time with a large number
of other horses, they can demonstrate different behaviours. They may also become aggressive, which will gain them a higher place in the herd hierarchy.
The time he spends with other horses may be valuable and that’s why he’s
unwilling to come in.
Make sure you’re very firm with him when you handle him. Use a bridle and perhaps a whip to lead him so that he’s unable to resist. Use a strong voice and move him away from you when you’re working around him, or grooming him,
so he’ll learn you’re not to be bullied. If you’re firm, he’ll learn to give you the
respect you need in order to handle him safely.
If the problem persists, look for an experienced instructor or trainer to help you re-educate him and give you more tips on how to refocus his behaviour.
