My horse really knows his own strength – how can I stop him being so bargy when I lead him?

You need to do everything you can to show your position as herd leader. One of the most important things to remember is that you never step backwards when you are with him. If he rubs against you, or comes too close for you to adjust the saddle, etc, do not step away to make space – you must get him to step back from you. But it is better to avoid the problem by keeping him out of your space to begin with. Consider this:
● Imagine you have a hoola-hoop-sized space around your middle. Your horse can only come into that space politely if you allow it. This is how two horses would act, whether in a field together or in a bigger herd. They are very aware of each other’s personal space bubble.
● If your horse comes and rubs on you, don’t assume he’s being friendly – he isn’t. He’s subtly testing whether he can push you. You should act as if your feet are nailed on the ground, unless you need to move forward or to the side.
● Whenever you handle your horse, walk tall and have a confident and controlled manner. Your shoulders should be back and your head up, as all these tiny signs will make your horse think you are in charge.
● If you ask your horse to move in any given direction, he should move with a light aid and willingness. Bargy horses can be so tight and straight in the neck there is no give.
Initially you may have a physical tussle, as your horse pits the strength of his jaw/neck/shoulder against you. We are not strong enough to fight like this, so we have to try another way. The best way is to work on your horse’s hindquarters – if he is pushing into you, smartly flick a rope at his ribs or stifle to move him sideways off you. If that doesn’t work, keep irritating him with twirls of the rope.
● Work on general bending and softening throughout the length of his spine, as this will get him into the habit of being a more willing partner for you.
