We have 8 horses at the moment ranging from 12hh-16hh and aged between 2yr and 22yrs and none of them wear shoes. All their feet are trimmed on a 4-6 wk cycle (depending on the horse) and all are ridden regularly including on roads. We also compete them in affiliated SJ, dressage, showing, HT, ODE's and hunting in the winter. The key is good, regular barefoot trimming and regular excersise as both of these factors encourage healthy hoof growth. I'd leave your horses feet bare if I were you- ignore the pressure to shoe from others!- but make sure you don't allow the hoof wall to become too long or you will run into problems. Regular trimming is the answer. Look up Pete Ramey on the internet and buy his book!
