my mare and foal will not be separated, and i have been in situations with my friend when she used to breed and she didn't separate hers either. By having her horse's in herd like conditions, and removing all the fussing crap and letting the horse's be horse's, the foals grew up into calm, easy to handle creatures. We never had any separation issues personally, as the horse's were quite content knowing that they would be separated for a bit and then reunited later on. My mare is a herd dominant mare, who has lots of courage, pride but manners and accepts mum and I as the herd leaders, and personally i cannot think of a greater role-model for my filly.
