Bitless bridles are very dangerous if they are not used properly, so be careful. They exert extra pressure on the nose and so some horses love them and some don't, a bit like marmite. But its worth a go just remember how strong they are! The thing is, you don't want him to keep getting used to these strong bits and become hard mouthed to the extent you can't hold him in anything. I'm afraid the only solution would be to learn to hold him and cope with it - easier said than done I know!!
Also, someone below said 'not on a strong horse' - in response to that, a bitless bridle or hackamore is designed for the stronger horse that is numb in the mouth and so like I mentioned before it adds pressure to the nose. Used properly it is a very nice method.
