Hi, I have gone bitless, have been for about 18 months. My arab was fighting me to put the bridle on and was prone to taking off and having no breaks what so ever, resulting in me injuring myself quite badly. I am one of these ppl that if something is not right, I wont rest till I find a solution and I come across the website for the Dr Cook bridles, when you read it, it sounded like this was the perfect answer and the more I told people that I was thinking of going bitless, the more they were quite quickly pointing out "I was off my head riding my horse bitless".
As it turns out, my horse now no longer fights me when it comes to putting the bridle on, he actually lowers his head for me to do it and then when he has got wound up to the point you know normally he would break away with me, the bitless works on pressure points to the head, a bit like the parelli halter where as the bit will just pull in their mouth which is what my horse was fighting when I had no breaks. My horse has never tanked away from me since. He dont shake his head or pull on the bit, clamp his mouth shut anymore and his teeth have always been done regulary.
If you know someone that has one, it would be work asking if you can try it out. I didnt go for the cheap cosmic leather ones, I wanted one that was going to last so luckily come across a Barefoot Bitless Bridle on ebay to match my Barefoot Treeless Saddle so I was more than happy with it! Otherwise it was Dr Cooks Bridle! My sister was not so sure on using one for her stroppy mare but after my horse being the test dummy for it, even she wants to try it on her mare to see how she goes! I would never go back to a bit now but thats me!!!
