My daughter is schooling her young horse, and we wanjted some cheap, light and flexible poles for her. My OH is in the carpet trade and he saved us the inners from the carpet rolls. Mostly they are very thick cardboard which is ideal for us as they will bend if they are stood on/fallen on and as we have an indoor school getting wet isn't an issue, BUT some are plastic and are excellent jump poles. They are fairly lightweight and obviously free. They are generally about 12 feet long as well so you can saw them in half to get shorter poles. It may be worth going visiting your nearest carpet shops and asking them if they will save the plastic roll insides for you. I'm sure they would oblige.
