My 12-year-old gelding stops eating mid feed to take a break. He never used to do this. Even though he does eventually finish all the feed, he is losing weight. What could be causing this?

This may be a symptom of gastric ulcers. Gastric ulcers are a particular problem for racehorses and are increasingly being seen in leisure horses who are on restricted fibre diets, or those who are stressy individuals. Weight loss and poor condition are associated with ulcers, so it’s worth getting this checked out by your vet.
