What can I can feed my 14.3hh Welsh sec D who’s prone to laminitis, to help give her a little more energy when I am riding her? She can be quite sluggish. At the moment she has soaked hay, Dengie Hi-Fi Lite, suet, garlic and carrot and apples, and a broad spectrum powder supplement.

Nutritionist Katie Williams replies:
Your horse’s current diet is good in terms of trying to avoid laminitis, as it is free from cereals. Unfortunately it tends to be cereals that give horses more energy, because the starch they contain is a quick-release energy source. As you need to avoid giving your horse cereals, the alternative is to use fibre sources.
There are a couple of fibre feeds that you could try: change the Hi-Fi Lite to Alfa-A Lite, which contains more energy, but still with low sugars. An unmolassed alfalfa chop such as Creature Comforts Natural Alfalfa would be an alternative to Alfa-A Lite. Alfalfa chops contain about the same amount of energy as low-energy mixes and so are sufficient to support light-to-moderate work in many horses.
You could also try unmolassed sugar beet such as Speedi Beet. Sugar beet is a fibre source that’s broken down relatively quickly compared to other fibrous feeds such as hay.
Finally, check you’re feeding the correct amount of the vitamin and mineral supplement as vitamins and minerals are important for keeping up energy.
