My mare – a 14.2hh, TB cross – is a terribly finicky feeder and I am at my wits’ end trying to get her to eat up. Can you help? I buy the best quality feed I can find.

Nutritionist Katie Williams says:
There are lots of things to try:
● Ensure her feed bucket and scoop are clean.
● Check the food hasn’t gone off. High oil feeds can go rancid but won’t necessarily look mouldy.
● Try to determine whether your maredislikes the textures of certain feeds. Does she find pellets too hard or mashes too sloppy?
● Feed little and often. Use lots of small meals to try to make sure your mare eats her daily ration. Use concentrated sources of nutrients, such as balancers, as these
will provide a full requirement of vitamins and minerals in a small volume of feed.
● Try a snack ball. This releases small amounts of pellets at a time and your mare might find it more interesting to have to move the ball around to get her daily feed.
● There are lots of feeds with added flavours and herbs that horses often find palatable. Ask manufacturers to send you a free sample so you can try before you buy.
● If you have to keep changing her diet to keep her interested, try adding a digestive supplement, as this should reduce the risk of any digestive upsets.
