The best way to make your horse to lose weight is if he is stabled full time and clipped, then take his stable rugs off for an hour everyday. If possible, turn him out for an half an hour with no rugs on too. You may feel cruel, but actually the horse will enjoy the fresh air without weight on his back! The horse uses up a lot of calories keeping warm, but if he doesn't have to bother then he's not burning anything! Also, if he is stabled full time then you could turn him out for the day with just a couple of slices of hay, and bring him in at night with somemore hay and his usual feed. However, his usual feed could be lessended dramatically, depending on how good a doer he is. If he is good, he may only need 10% of his feed to be concentrate if he is being turned out. Try and give him daily excercise, and with losing weight, the best way to go is to start with short hacks in an active walk, and once he is up to it, build up his stamina with long trots. Only once he is trim start to canter as it is very hard work for him otherwise! Hope this helps you and hpefully your horse will thank you for taking the extra weight off his back that he is constantly carrying!
