My 16.3hh TB x WB mare is underweight after an unsuccessful spell on loan. I’ve had her checked over for physical problems and taken advice from a saddler. She has four feeds a day and isn’t left without feed. What can I do to help her?

Feeding expert Katie Lugsden advises:
Change her feed to something with more calories that’s designed specifically to put on weight. Having access to plenty of hay and four feeds a day will also help her. ● Feed options include: Baileys No4 Topline conditioning cubes; Dodson & Horrell Build Up cubes; Dengie Alfa-A chaff.
● Amounts: feed four feeds of 3lbs of feed and ½lb of chaff. Adding carrots is fine. The cubes are balanced with essential nutrients, so there’s no need to add vitamin and mineral supplements.
● Workload: don’t work her too much until she’s put on plenty of weight – the more she works, the more calories she’ll use up. Competing will also use up lots of calories.
