How much should my 12.2hh Welsh sec A weigh? He needs to lose weight and I’m not sure what to aim

Nutritionist Katie Williams replies:
Obviously, weights vary according to a pony’s build and frame, but it would be fair to expect your 12.2hh to weigh between 225-275kg. What is important is to calculate his condition score by looking at the amount of fat your pony is carrying. For example, if you can’t feel his ribs and he has a cresty neck, then regardless of what he weighs, he is overweight. Using a weigh tape regularly will help you to monitor his weight and check it is going down, not up!
