It is what you are trying to do, the cheap ones are oat straw and molasses, then the others dont have the molasses or just a liitle and will contain besides the oat straw, Lucerne (Alfafa), or some just Alfafa. Dobson & Horrell do Fibrgy its like original Hi-Fi which both contain alfafa. Ordinary chaffs as well as some of the other types you can now buy "own brand" from the feed merchant, which in these hard times is something to ask as well as they do hard feed high fibre nuts and mixes all at reduced prices

I have a 5yr old cob gelding thats 15.2hh, I havent owned him long and he needed feeding up and now that its getting colder he seemed hungry all the time and looking for something more- I spoke to my local horse feed shop and she recommended adding chaff to his horse/pony cubes, and adding a mineral- its been 4days and what a different horse- he's not as fizzy as he was as he had actually become quite aggressive- I'd have to check the brand name because I cannot remember as only just getting back into horse ownership - but it was the brand she uses on her own cob and I find my cob cannot cope with usually mixes-makes him demented-but he is definitely back to the calm horse I bought- although still his usua lyoungster cocky cob self-but no longer aggressive- so I swear it has to be the chaff that has made the improvement- I do add tiny amount of water just to dampen as it blows up his nose otherwise and he hates that-but he has horse/pony cubes, chaff + a mineral added to it all in the same feed bucket- then plenty of haylage and is turned out 24/7 with the availability of going in the stables should he wish to.

think it really depends on the breed of your horse- and it is confusing with so many brands- this chaff i have wasnt the cheapest but wasnt the dearest either- I'll check the brand when go up yard later.
