I currently have a 14.3hh Welsh Section D on loan, and she has been untouched for three years, and owners claim to have not fed her anything over this time. I feed her anyway, as it is coming into the winter, but is also helping to get her used to me (2 weeks today i've had her ! )

I don't give her a lot, only a hanful of mollichaff and a small handful of pony nuts, but she also gets hay in the field where she is at the moment. I'm feeding her as well because i'd like to bring her into work again, so she'll need the extra.

It depends on whether it is a good doer (which cobs usually are) and how much work you are doing with it, It sounds like a lot to me, but i can't be sure myself.

Any good supplier should be able to tell you what they'll need and cope with and without,

Hi- I have recently owned a 15.2hh welsh partbred  cob- he's just turned 5. he had very poor grazing in his previous home and was a bit under weight and now the grass has nothing in it he become agressive and was going after the other horses feed which was a mix and made him demented if he stole the smallest amount- so I took advice and now feed him 1 scoop horse cubes, 1 scoop chaff , add a mineral to it, he has haylage when he wants in field.,is turned out 24/7 but has the option of going in the stables if he wants to because where I live and where he is kept there can be quite a few degress difference in temperatue despite being a 10min car drive from each other- and a few nights recently has been barely reaching 1-2 degrees.

He has gained a nice steady weight and is looking far healthier and is much happier and calmer.

Cobs are known for greediness and will just keep eating if you give into them- so if yours is of good weight and doesn't need feeding up maybe just some chaff and haylage /hay and grazing should be fine. or maybe just a small amount of pony/horse cubes-but seek professional advice if unsure because cobs take a long time to lose excess weight and it depends on his work load also

Generally with cobs, ANY feeding is over feeding!
It sounds cruel, but unless you are riding yours every day and they are buring the cals and energy that is being fed to them, you are heading down a slippery slope of obesity. In cobs, they put the weight on in a drop of a hat, but it can take months upon months to get the weight to drop.
speak to a professional nutritionist from Baileys or Dodson and Horrel and they can advise you the best feed for your horse.
