With the show season coming up, my vet has suggested I try using Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) as a more economical alternative to magnesium-based calming supplements. How effective are they compared with the specialised magnesium supplements, and how much should I feed?

Magnesium affects the nervous system and creates a calmed affect. I would recommend feeding a supplement for at least six weeks to see if a positive effect is achieved – results are rarely shown overnight.
Epsom salts are a cheap and effective way of supplementing magnesium. However, the amount absorbed is small, and overdosing with these salts can lead to diarrhoea. A pony would only require half a small cup’s-worth a day in feed. If any diarrhoea occurs, reduce the amount you feed.
