I don’t know my horse’s exact age, but from his teeth I’d say he’s in his twenties. He needs bute before and after the farrier’s visit, and suffers when the ground’s hard. He’s also been treated for sinusitis in the past and still suffers from a runny nose.
Which remedies for arthritis and respiratory support could I give him?

Vet Stephen Ashdown replies:
A runny nose like this can be difficult to clear, particularly if it’s still coming from his sinuses. The product I’ve had most success with is AirwayPlus from Global Herbs – it’s good for breaking down mucus and keeping airways open. Other remedies to try include:
● High levels of liquorice, which I use alongside other herbs that help dry up the nose with a diuretic action – this means it improves water flow through the body.
SP Equine Health and Herbal produce NoWheeze, which contains liquorice root.
● Ginger and frankincense, which can be anti-inflammatory. Global Herb’s MovefreePlus is ginger-based.
● Supplements including glucosamine and MSM (methylsulfonylmethane).
