I’ve heard of Equine Hanna Somatics, or EHS. What is it, and could it help my horse? I like to keep him comfortable.

Horse Answers editor Kate Large explains:
Equine Hanna Somatics (EHS) is a way of relaxing over-contracted muscles. EHS practitioner John Hunt explains that horses, like humans, tend to ‘hold’ their muscles in a pattern of excessive over-contraction.
To help these muscles relax, a practitioner asks the muscle to voluntarily contract and then decontract in a slow and supported way.
“All EHS movements are done slowly, to access the voluntary part of the horse’s brain. You’re asking them to let go of a learned pattern,” says John.
EHS treatments cost £100, which includes a phone consultation beforehand and exercises to follow.
