I ride my 16.3hh TB x Shire in a Waterford snaffle, but he’s started to fix against it and won’t turn left or right. When I try to turn him, he throws his head up or slams on the brakes. How can I find a soft bit that he will accept but still be controlled in? I’ve had his teeth and back checked – the back man said his back was sore and the saddle sat to the right.

I think there’s still a problem with his teeth – get a second opinion from an equine dentist as mouth problems will affect everything through his body and cause misalignment. Then have his back checked again. I like Myler bits, which you can find online. You could try the comfort snaffle, which aims to reduce pinching.
