Tester: Ginny Cook who has a yard of mares, youngstock and dressage horses. She tested the muzzle on Boksa, a 16.3hh Cleveland Bay X who puts weight on easily and is prone to laminitis. He usually wears a full-size headcollar.

Overall verdict: 3.5/5

What’s great?

Ginny says, “This has lots of fastenings and adjusters to ensure a good fit. There’s a choice of touch and close fastening or clip for putting on and taking off. The ring for leading is great and the muzzle acts well as a headcollar. There’s plenty of room in the muzzle and the open weave sides allowed Boksa to breathe and didn’t rub. He does try to rub it off in the field, but fails. The central hole allows him to graze contentedly.”

What’s not so great?

Ginny says, “There are lots of fastenings that may cause rubbing if worn for long periods. The fastenings could be longer, too, as they are fitted at full length for Boksa. The touch and close and bucket clog with dirt and grass when the horse rolls.”

I use this on my 12.2hh welsh pony, he has never had laminitus but I am paranoid he may! He is a very good doer and I find that he can wear this muzzle all through the day in order for him to be able to have the night time free! I would definately buy one again. The velcro does need to be kept clean as it does clog slightly with mud / grass from rolling.

I bought two of these 1 for my welsh A 7 year old mare & 1 for my 2 year old new forest filly. I found the adjustment & fit was excellent, but what struck me was that they tried everything to rub them off & they both stayed on I was amazed as they always get their headcollars off. They havent rubbed at all & have meant that the girls dont have to be stuck inside.
