Unfortunately horses seem to pick mites up from the soil, so no matter what you do, they may come back, but if you are vigilant about treating them, you can keep on top of it, you just have to make it part of your routine. We've tried everything, including Pestoban which didn't work. We have 2 cobs, one clipped and one traditional, because he's had mites so badly he won't let me clip his legs. We use Stop-it-All which is by far the best product, and really kills the mites. I put it on every week, even after the mites have gone, just in case. For more info go to www.karenruggles.co.uk and follow the instructions that come with the product. Can't recommend it enough.

My friends horse had feather mites and the vet gave her the flea drops that you give cats and dogs. It gets rid of them

I washed my horses legs with Hibiscrub and it seemed to do the trick

Thanks Max Magic for your information - I will look into this - the mare I bought came wuite heavily burdened with them - the vet is recommending a cattle treatment - Dectomax that should bring them right back and then you should be able to manage them.
I have a Shire X with a bit of feather too - he is not bothered by them - so have kep them in seperate fields across a road from each other until I get on top of it.
Sadly there is no licenced product at present to treat them - farrier has suggested riding in sea?

My horse had dectomax, it did nothing for his mites and i think he had a reaction which the vet called suprisingly a 'viral' illness!!!

My horse has terrible mites. When i bought him they had not been cared for and his legs would come in bleeding and covered in cuts. I began by having the Dectomax injection, but it did not last for long. I also hibiscrubbed, and used flea removal shampoo every other day. This would be okay for a while, but after 8 weeks his legs would be awful again. He is now on a schedule of a dectomax injection every 6 weeks, and a full clip on his legs at the same time. He also has a brand new bed on the same day to ensure no mites can get back into his legs. Although this is working, the mites are not going completely. My vet has told me this is practically impossible.

Try and keep the legs as dry as possible as washing them/ getting damp conditions only aggravates the mites. I recently bought a full shire and by washing with hibiscrub once a fortnight and drying well (i use white wood flour to dry the legs quickly after washing or bringing in from the field) seems to be keeping them under control. My local Heavy Horse club has given me lots of advice including getting the dectomax injection every spring & a mix of sulphur powder & liquid parafin or baby oil to treat the condition. One thing i do find excellent is if you end up with sores use sudacrem/ nappy rash cream on the sores as it dries them up and heals them quickly and puts my horse off chewing at them.

Use Pig Oil and Sulpher and you will never have another feather related problem. If you have trouble getting it, it is for sale, pre-mixed on eBay.

Frontline! My rescue cob had harvest mites when i got her years ago. Once sprayed with this (avaliable from your vet and is a dog/cat flea spray) she never got them again.
