What do you use for transport?

Just looking into getting my own transport.

What 4x4's does everyone use?

I don't have very large budget and I have a 17hh to pull, does any one use a freelander?

I'm also trying to decide whats a better option, a 4x4 and trailer or a box?

Thanks in advance :)

What do you use for transport?

I have a Shogun and used to pull a trailer but my lot are not good travellers so now if we do have to go anywhere I get a lorry.

I've got a Ranger double cab pick up truck - 4 bales of hay fit in back too without messing the cab interior!

Good value for money to buy used and they hold their value, and tax is same as an estate car. I'd rather have a small lorry but the small amount I'd use it doesn't warrant it.

Re: What do you use for transport?

Because we need a 4x4 to get down a very muddy track to our field, I never had the option of having a lorry as it would have been sitting doing nothing most of the time.

I don't have a trailer anymore as none of ours go anywhere now, but back in the day we had an Ifor Williams 505 which I towed with a Landrover Disco. Never had any problems with it with 2 horses in, and as Richard says above, you hardly know there's a trailer there.

And also, as Richard says, I've seen lorries being towed out of muddy show grounds and fields with a tractor, while we managed on our own - just engage low ratio and you're away.

But I'm afraid I know nothing about the Freelander, sorry, but I presume the engine size and bhp are less than the Disco so you'd have less power there.

And I've read some quite disturbing reports about safety in some of the smaller side loading van type lorries, so if you do go down that route make sure you investigate them really well - very thin plyboard partitions can be dangerous.

Good luck !!

I've heard freelanders are pretty rubbish. Any one know about Nissan X-Trails, Honda CRV, or Suzuki grand vitara, they're more in my price range...

I think a lorry would be too pricey, its just another vehicle to tax, mot, service etc, and not really worth it for the amount I'd use it.

If you do get a freelander DO NOT get a petrol. They are REALLY bad and constantly break down!! I dont tow any trailer as I dont go anywhere. x

We've just got an Ifor Williams 510 (the bigger one) and my friends ford ranger truck tows that with 2 large horses in really well, she also uses it to tow her very large equitek and has never had a prob. I'm lucky as my mum has a massive Toyota Land Crusier which we borrow so means no expensive 4x4 for me to insure :) You can't even tell your towing anything with that beast lol. The upsides to trailer are the fact you dont have to pay tax, mot etc. However if you were to use it enough then a lorry is a lovely luxury :)

In defence of the Freelander ....

From about 2005 they used BMW engines and these have been 100% okay.

I was looking at about 06+ so thats good to know. What are they like to insure, tax etc?

Re: What do you use for transport?

I swopped from a discovery and trailer to a lorry due to having 3 horses 3 years ago. If you have a trailer and 4 x 4 make sure that the weight of your towing vehicle unladen is more than the weight of your trailer fully laden. I was stopped by dept of transport nazis and they were very strict on the weight of my discovery and had i been over the limit were quite prepared to impound my vehicle and trailer until i have unloaded some of the weight from the trailer.

You also need the extra weight in your towing vehicle to ensure you can stop in the event of an emergency, a fully laden trailer that needs to be stopped suddenly will cause untold damage and upset (for all concerned) if the vehicle towing it cant stop it in sufficient time!

I work in a garage and would advise you to stay away from freelanders! the best ones i would say to go for would be the japanese stuff - as in shogun or landcruiser. The newer shape shogun/pajeros have a 3.2 did engine and there pretty economical!

Re: What do you use for transport?

My husband is a mechanic and he has nothing positive or repeatable to say about landrovers in general, but particularly freelanders!  He also says that the newer freelander models do not have the legal amount of brake power to tow horses and are best left to mobile hairdressers!  We have an Isuzu trooper and it really is a workhorse, we use it to pull a Bateson trailer and our horses are all now over 16hh, the largest being 16.3.  We also have a Mercedes Atego lorry which we converted ourselves, it used to be a delivery lorry for a furniture company so we had to stall it and fit it ourselves which is much cheaper than buying one ready  done but you do need to know what you're about.
