How can vets get it so wrong?

I took 1 of my ferrets to the vet  2 weeks ago. I thought i was going to lose her as she was really poorly and went down hill very fast , literally over night, they can go down very fast. Any way i told the vet why i was there and i explained that she was pregnant and due the following week, ie the end of last  week. The vet had a good feel of her tummy and said she wasnt pregnant and it looked like she was coming into season so he wanted to give her a jill jab to fetch her out of season, you have to fetch them out of season or you lose them as it makes them very poorly. I told him i have a vasectomised hob at home and i would use him if she got better. Anyway i came home with antibiotics for her as she had a bad chest infection. Believe me getting tablets down a ferret is not fun, luckily i have some vitamin paste that she loves so i crushed them up and put them in that to make life easier..

Well last week she continued to improve and her tummy continued to get bigger. I fed her yesterday and guess what. Her tummy is suddenly alot slimmer. The vet got it wrong!! She has given birth. I have heard them sqeaking tonight when she went back into them after having her feed . I haven't a clue how many she has had and i wont get to find out for the next 3 weeks as if i open the bed up to find out she will more gthan likely kill them as she will think that someone is about attack them so she would kill them to prevent that. So my little Nancy is a mum .

The vet needs to go back to vet school!  Congrats to Nancy, I don't know much about ferrets, my dad did have one years ago called Snowy (because he was white!) but I was really very young and can't remember much about him other than he was white.  I know they can kill their young though.  Bet you can't wait to meet them!

Re: How can vets get it so wrong?

My OH has 2 hobs and 3 jills, he keeps the 2 hobs together in one hutch and the 3 jills in another at the moment so they dont have babies this year.

Is it the vet who said the jill would die if she wasn't brought out of season? I ask, as our jills have been in season this year with no problem, only keeping the hobs away as the jills are likely to come back in season as they wont be pregnant. They all live together over the winter.

Last year there were two jills and one hob and they had only four live babies as the two mothers weren't separated in time and one mother's babies were all killed by the other. We had to leave the two mothers together as we couldn't work out who was the actual mother of the babies, and both fed and looked after all four babies.

Anyway, congratulations Nancy!

If you aren't breeding from them this year then take to the vets and have the jill jab done. It isn't very expensive or do you know anyone with a vasectomised hob you can borrow. You do need to fetch them out of season or they can get very poorly as they need to be mated to be brought out or they get an infection and it is this that can lead to their death. It really isn't worth leaving them and risking it.

I heard the babies squeaking again tonight so hopefully they will make it and i will get to see them, fingers crossed.

Thanks for the info, Micki, I know nothing about ferrets, they are my OH's and he's had ferrets from when he was a child, so I assume he knows this and just hasn't mentioned it!   I'll tell him anyway, just in case.

Good luck with the babies!
