How do you keep your horse

Thought I would just start a question of how you keep your horse / horses, as mine is with a herd of Mare's out with a gelding, 2 guesses who is head mare my Sabina, and its interesting to watch communication, just a flick of ears back and others move out of her way, then the one under her does the same and they call to each other if one in a field and another in the stable, but we try not to leave one by themselves in the field. When Sabina was at another yard she was in a herd of just mares and their was a very bossy nasty mare who was boss and also the YO hated all the mares and especially mine when she was nearly double barreled but unfortunately Sabina missed, the other mare squashed the YO against the gate and I actually caught the YO hitting one horse in the face. When I had Tonka at first he was at livery and they put mares and geldings out seperately until one day had a new groom and she did what they did at her yard before put all out together, so I received a complaint about my old devil Tonka taking on 12  Mares and now having a Mare know its the Mare who starts proceedings, not the male

Gypsy Gold does not chink & glitter. It gleams in the sun and neighs in the dark.Tonka & Lara my beautiful horses RIP, Nelson,Chloe & Kitty the cats.

Re: How do you keep your horse

We rent a very small yard and have two horses, our gelding Tenor is dominant and likes his own space and for our sins lol we also have a dominant mare ! My OH has divided the field into six small paddocks they have one paddock each and we rotate them to give the grass a break, we don't always have the electric on so they can groom each other over the fence, they both seem happy with individual turn out.

Re: How do you keep your horse

I am really lucky and keep my horses at home. I have the stables at the top of my back garden and the fields are across the road. I own just over 1 acre and i rent another acre and at he moment i have the use of another acre paddock from my neighbour, so just over 3 acres. I have a mixed herd of 4 horses, 2 mares and 2 geldings. The oldest mare (21yrs old) is the leader and no one challenges her as they all know that if they do she will quickly put them back in their place, she usually just has to look at them and they behave.

At the moment Candy and Casey are both out all day and night in a grass pasture. In the evening Candy gets fed a big mash of soaked alfalfa cubes, rice bran, and a vitamin/mineral supplement. Casey gets fed a small bit of soaked cubes to go with her joint and vitamin/mineral supplement. We are building a second stall. They will spend the night in the stall and out in a grassless run during the day in good weather or if the pastures are dry and we have enough grass they will be on pasture during the day. And I keep them at home!
