From Snakes to Wasps - wrong BEES!!!

I was wandering around the paddocks yesterday (ragworting) and came across the hugest wasp nest I have ever seen, at least I think it was wasps I didn't hang around to find out!  it was in the hedge and a millon wasps all hanging onto it, about 2ft in diameter at the top down to a point and hanging about 3ft.

Not sure whether to just leave it or get it dealt with really!

That sounds more like a bee swarm rather than wasps, if you have any bee keepers near you give them a call they will usually come and collect them, your local council may well have a number for you to ring.

Hmmm tbh I didn't hang about to find out, but I suspect you are both right and they were bees, yummy lets go get the honey :-)

Oooo there is a thought, get someone to take the bees and then give Welshie the honey for her hay fever - job sorted!

If it was bees then hurray! Bees form swarms when a new queen emerges from her cell in the hive. Its a great sign as it means the local bee hives are healthy! The adult flying bees leave the existing nest with the new queen leaving behind the young emerging bees to take care of the old queen and nest. When you see a swarm it means they are taking the new queen off to set up a new colony.

if you contact the local bee keepers association they will come and get them free of charge : www.bbka.org.uk has a link to keepers in each area.

or you could keep watch and see if they set up a hive near you, although preferably not in your stables!
