Horse is scared of travelling

I ride for this girl and there is a lovely coloured gelding that i ride for her. we went to put him on the box a few months back and he walked on fine but as soon as the back bar went up he freaked out (he was on loan to some girl and he must have had a bad experince in the box with her as he travelled fine before). he scrambled around and cut his leg and pulled a shoe off. whatever way he cut his leg he pierced it and it got infected and he then had to go to a equine clinic that was over 3 hours away. he travelled down okay and travelled back okay after treatment. so hes got over his scare i think. but now i want to put him on the lorry to get to shows. how should i go around doing this?

Lots of practising (sp) have plently of trial runs when you've got all the time in the world so theres no rush or panicing about being somewhere. Its good he managed to travel well the last time as should mean he should be okay. Be really positive and make it a positive experience for him :) Hope all goes okay!

Are you going to load him in a trailer or on a horsebox?

If its a trailer take down the front ramp so it looks more roomy, and take a bucket of food with you too. When you have loaded him on and put the back bar up (easier with another person to help you) give him a handful of food, then walk him off quietly and then give him a bit more food. Use the food as a reward for him standing on the trailer. Do this a few times till he just walks on easily and then try him with the ramp up. if he does this quietly too, maybe take in around the block on a short travel. Dont forget to keep the rewards coming for every little step forward. Good luck

Just take it nice and slowly, walk him on just to have a munch of his haynet then make a fuss of him and lead him off. Never force him into the trailer or he will be likely to panic, when you arrive at a venue don't rush him off of the trailer, untie him and make him wait for a moment then ask him to stand at the top of the ramp before walking him off, give him a treat when he stands. We taught our youngster to relax in the trailer by being really calm ourselves and not rushing her, she will now wait until we decide to lead her off. Build his confidence by starting with short trips. Good luck XX

Re: Horse is scared of travelling

My Horse Sabina actually trashed a 3.5 tonne horse lorry broke the girls mother leg and Sabina had to be cut out of the box by firebrigade, she paniced when she put her hoof through the partition between the horse and driver which should have been reinforced but only 3/8" ply then the front breach bar was not right either, this was a brand new box never been used, she was used to travelling in a big horse lorry and also a Ifor Williams box, so to move her I use a very big lorry to keep her happy, this I have used 3 times. It is unfortunately the experience the horse has travelling and the fantastic memory they have. Tonka was not good at loading so I rode him home, but eventually he would do anything for me.

Gypsy Gold does not chink & glitter. It gleams in the sun and neighs in the dark.Tonka & Lara my beautiful horses RIP, Nelson & Chloe the cats.
