Leg infection :'(

My horse has resently developed a nasty leg infection which has caused his leg to swell and he's become lame. He has had three doses of penicillin but hasnt yet improved. I have been told that his leg will burst out, could this cause permanent lameness or will he make a full recovery after a period of time?

Without more information it is hard to tell what part of the leg is affected and what could happen.  From what you've said it sounds as though it may be an abscess, is this right?  If so then once it has popped and cleaned up, it should heal over without leaving your horse lame and the pain will go almost immediately.

Leg infection :'(

There is no sign of any abscess, literally the only thing is swelling of the leg and it smells. He is very sore on all of his leg, I've thoroughly checked his leg and hoof

Re: Leg infection :'(

It sounds as though there is something which is known as a "collection" i.e. there is a collection of pus in the tissues which has come about through infection.  This could have gained entry through a cut or even a small scratch which you've maybe not noticed at the time.  It will need antibiotics to clear it up, your horse will likely need a course of them so get the vet back onto the case straight away, if this is left without treatment your horse could become unwell if the infection gets into the bloodstream, the antibiotics will prevent this happening - it is called "sepsis" or "septicaemia".  If the pus bursts out through the skin, which may or may not happen, then you will have a wound requiring a lot of sterile cleaning and dressing until it heals properly but your horse will still require antibiotic therapy.  In other words get the vet back.  All in all though, your horse should make a full recovery once treated.

Re: Leg infection :'(

I had a horse that had a similar situatio and he was on the wrong anti biotic for the infection and infact was put on an anti biotic that had only been tested on zebra equines but it worked and the vet put drains in his leg  he made a full recovery but it was a long slow and very painfull process the worst thing was my boy was strict box rest but infact this made it worse and I had him out several times a day in hand moving reduces swelling and in my opinion helps mental state an the infection to tract out good luck
