These things are sent to try us and boy they certainly do !!!

We have had 2 bad months with Tilly, basically she's been refusing to work in the arena and showing her displeasure by bronking and threatening to rear, if pushed she does rear ! The behaviour then progressed to hacking out, which she has always enjoyed, she will just leap into the air at random so has become very unpredictable. I actually got off the other night as it just was'nt safe.

Anyway, the vet came out and could'nt find anything wrong, we had her teeth checked and the saddler came out to look at her saddle ( all okay ) Friday we had the physio out and again she could'nt find anything wrong apart from a slight soreness in her back but she did'nt think that would cause such erratic behaviour. So we are back to square one !! The only conclusion we've come to is that it could be season related, she tends to be bad the week before and the week during her season so sadly that's half of the month ! We can't afford Regumate so I'm going to try her on Agnus Castus.

Hopefully we will eventually get to the bottom of this, also Tilly is extremely dominant so OH is planning some in hand training sessions for her. If anyone has any other idea's on this however small please let me know, thanks so much everyone XX

I have a friend who has a mare who used to be a nightmare during her seasons, to the point where she was really dangerous.  She had her on regumate which did help but as you know is really expensive, in the end she had some "marbles" placed in her womb which seemed to help - not sure what this actually is though, but it did seem to work!

Mares! the best one I had was a Chestnut ex-racehorse Lara who did rear to get her own way but soon stopped, now Sabrina a Belgian Warmblood Mare have tried Naf Oestress soft of worked but better results with feedmark hormonese butin season still can be a firebreathing dragon, but we are a new team not yet 12 months together, also she is the herd leader and don't like leaving the gelding.

Gypsy Gold does not chink & glitter. It gleams in the sun and neighs in the dark.Tonka & Lara my beautiful horses RIP, Nelson,Chloe & Kitty the cats.

Hi Lyn

Get Tilly onto Red Clover herb it works wonders for the hormonal mare and she is more likely to take it than Agnus Castus, although AC is very good, it may take a month to have an effect but I know a lot of mares that it really helps to calm them down.
Good luck xx

Hi Rhapsody, Kevin and Karen, thank you for your replies, I'm in danger of boring the pants off of everyone with Tilly's ongoing problems lol ! I will have a look at the red clover as tbh I've never seen this before. I have had one short hack out on Tilly since the physio checked her and she was very stressed and constantly turning her head to the right, she felt like a coiled spring ! I'm thinking now that I'm the problem as she obviously does'nt trust me, this has'nt always been the case but if it continues we will have to find a very experienced rider to get us through this bad patch. Thanks again guys XX

Please dont think it's you Lyn :-(

As you said, these things ARE sent to try us and sometimes it takes a while to get to the bottom of it. It can be a self fulfillng prophecy if you start to think it's you though....so try to banish negative thoughts!

You have always done the best by Tilly and I'm sure she still has every faith in you.  She could just be going through a troppy mare phase (I've only ever had mare so am well used to it! lol) Shame the physio didn't find anything...I was absolutely convinced that would sort her out :-(

Try the herbs suggested by others and keep going. Chin up - YOU HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB! But horses are horses and they seem to like to throw these things at us every once in a while!

Hi Sarah, thank you for your support, OH took Tilly back to Bromley Hall ( where she was doing some schooling ) on Thursday. The lady who is helping us lunged her in the Pessoa and Tilly was really good, she also went on the trailer like a dream ! OH has been told that he has to be firmer with Tilly and he has taken this on board. Tilly is extremely dominant and is full of little tricks, she's a very intelligent mare and knows exactly what to do to get her own way ( just like kids lol )

This evening we needed to get Tilly out of the stable to skip out and put extra straw in, as usual she did'nt want to come out and started pulling faces and turned her back on Dermot several times, well, what happened next was a risk but Dermot gave her a slap on the rump with the lead rope ! Her face was a picture, she was totally shocked and came straight up to him. We are agains't hitting but just needed to break the cycle, if she does it again tomorrow we will just jiggle the rope and hopefully the penny will drop and she will move over !

Thanks again for keeping in touch, speak soon, Lyn XX

Hope you can sort things out with her soon Lyn.

Are you going to try the red clover? Fate has been on the agnus castus for 3 days now, she has it in a little hifi with garlic, and there's been no problem with her eating it, she seems to find it palatable, but it'll take a while for the effects to kick in, will keep you updated on that, but she's not actually stroppy, only flirty, so slighlty different to Tilly anyway.

Hi Sue, I'm tempted to try the Agnus Castus first and see how it goes, we will have to compare notes lol. We need to be firmer with Tilly as she's trying it on big time ! Hopefully she will settle down again, we just need to be consistent and patient. I hope that Fate settles a bit during her next season, have a good weekend, Lyn XX
