Grooming Order

I've ridden at my local stables for 5 years, and I first learnt to ride there so I learnt everything I know about horses from there. Recently though, after meeting some new horse-minded friends and visiting their horses, I noticed people doing things differently. I usually pick feet out last, but my friend tells me to pick hooves out first. My other friend agrees with me.

So, I was wondering, is there a correct order in which you should groom?

Not as far as I know...

If there is then I can't understand why.

Maybe ask one of your friends why there should be a particular order?

Re: Grooming Order

Nah. People do stuff in all different orders for all sorts of things. No real order, just personal preference.

It's lonely in the saddle since the horse died.

Re: Grooming Order

The reason that some people pick out the feet first is because if you are grooming before riding it's a good idea to check the feet first incase the horse has a loose shoe or any other foot problem.

Re: Grooming Order

Hmm, not sure it really matters its personal preference, but I always do the feet first, then depending which horse, but if it is Welshie I then put mane detangler in her tail so that can dry and do its things while I do the rest of the body.

I don't really brush my lot every day, but I do make sure if noting else is done their feet are twice a day - no foot no horse!

I do tend to pick their feet out first so they dont have any stones stuck in their feet. Only as i wouldnt like it if i had one in my shoe, i also hose their legs down first before i pick em out.....one step closer to ocd

Ok, thanks everyone. I couldn't think of a reason of a grooming order before riding, I just thought I'd check! ;D

Re: Grooming Order

There is an order to grooming, but whether you do the feet at the beginning or the end doesn't really matter. We tend to pick the horse's feet out first, just so that all stones or other objects are removed to prevent the horse being uncomfortable. The general order for us would be: 1. Pick out and scrub the feet. 2: Remove any dry mud and other areas with a plastic curry comb. 3: Use the body brush and metal curry comb together to remove any grease from the coat. 4: Brush over the body with a dandy brush. 5: Wash of any stable stain. 6: Brush the face and use a sponge for the eyes, ears, nose and mouth. 7: Brush the mane and tail and sponge the dock area. 8: Wipe over the body with a hot towel or baby wipe to remove any grease that is sitting on top of the coat. 9: Apply hoof oil to the hooves. 10: Stand back and admire your work!! Hope this helps. Equi-Luv Grooming Services
