Suspensory Ligament Injury Recovery? :(

 Hi guys,

My mare has just been diagnosed with a suspensory ligament injury in her hind. :(

Really dont know how she managed it as she was in very light work, and not the type to mess in the field. Vet has diagnosed 3 weeks box rest (of which she is on her 2nd week with not much improvement) and then a rescan.

Just wondering if anyone has had to deal with this injury before, and does anyone have any personal experience of recovery?

My friends horse did this in one of his front legs a while back, did his messing in the field! Am pleased to report that after following the vets advice to the letter in terms of exercising turnout etc he made a full recovery and still completes regulary doing everything from show jumping to xc and ODE's. So chin up it's a slow process but there is hope at the end!

Update..

 Things not looking good.. :(

After 4 weeks box rest she is still on 4bute a day to be barely comfortable, have tried reucing bute amount when shes having a good day but she literally ends up standing on 3 legs all day.. really dont know what to do as she has suffered form liver issues before and really cannot go on with this amount of bute to just mask the issue, would hate to have to put her down but hate to see her in so much pain.. :(

Re: Suspensory Ligament Injury Recovery? :(

My horse damaged his collateral ligament in the pastern last year after getting strung up in a haynet, I had the physio out to him and she gave him ultrasound waves and pulse magnet therapy for the pain and to aid healing.  He was rested for several weeks as well, and I started him on tendoneaze from global herbs - he's fine now and back in work, and I was able to stop the tendoneaze after a year had gone by.  Tendons and ligaments take around a year to heal completely so please don't be too disheartened, it is long and slow I'm afraid.  What was the result of the scan?

Glad to hear your guy is back to health!

The result off the scan about 10days ago was really good, vet was very impressed and said in about 6 months she should be good to go back to light work, but since that day shes just gone rapidly downhill and seems really in alot of pain and very uncomfortable and we have had to up the bute dosage again, unfortunatly vet cant really do alot else and has said there will be up and down days, but she just really seems on a downhill spiral in the last while..

Gonna have another chat with vet tomoro and see what she says..
