Not mine!!

The three that belong to the family we share our field with have been lying down a lot more than usual recently.

Either they're all down when we get to the field, or they lie down while we're there, all three of them.

The owner doesn't seem worried, but to be honest I am - I've never seen them all lying down together before, and in fact very rarely any one of them, anyway.

They don't sound particularly colicy - I went and listened to their tummies - they don't seem footy - one of them has had laminitis in the past.

Two of them, a 12hh pony and a 14.2 native type had been on restricted grazing for a while, the other, an IDx, has teeth problems and had been on ordinary grazing. Then last week they were all put in together and given a largeish bit of extra grass - I know, but I bite my tongue !! - and it's since that they've started this behaviour.

Any ideas please, I'm a bit concerned.

If you were living here I would say they are suffering from the heat. For days we are having around 30°. Starlett also just puts herself in her stable and stands in a corner. I hope it cools a little bit soon.

HAVE YOU HUGGED YOUR HORSE TODAY???

If it's out of the ordinary behaviour & coincides with being let onto rich grass, esp as one(at least) has had laminitis in the past, I'd be taking it very seriously, because laminitis is a distinct possibility. Any excessive heat or bounding pulses?

where are you in the country? Theres a fairly non-serious virus going around here at the moment near Manchester and a few horses are being very lethargic.

We're in Devon, and thanks for all the replies, but I've put it down to having gorged themselves silly on the extra grass, as they were ok after a couple of days.

Then earlier in the week they were given another largish new strip, and the same thing happened - all lying down a lot, but they're up and wandering about again now.

The owner did say they were quite lethargic out hacking lately......
