So worried, strange lameness... :(

Boyz has been on and off lame on his off fore for about 4 weeks now, vet came out 2 weeks ago friday and said it was most probably a combination of him recovering from an abscess (as its been wet and then dry and then wet and then dry...) and a bruised sole (the week before he was sound so we hacked out and a massive stone got wedged in between his shoe and frog) there was a bit of heat and he was intermittantly lame on the lunge.

So she put him on bute for 10 days and restricted turnout. The vet said he didnt need box rest and she only wanted to pen him to be on the safe side so he would make a full recovery as he has just turned 16.

Anyway, vet returned on Thursday and he was still lame, only this time when lunged on his right rein he was hopping lame (when she last came he was 90% sound and threw in a couple of lame strides, which made her think it was just a bruise) she wants him in for further tests.

So now Boyz is booked in to the vets hospital for next week to have xrays, ultrasound and nerve blocks to find out what it is as he has no heat, swelling or pain when you manipulate his leg. He had a full vet check 3 months ago and was ruled 100% no arthritis. Only thing i can think it might be is he came back off loan in Feb unshod and his fronts were severly splayed to the inside :( other than that vet said possible bone/tendon/ligament/soft tissue damage.

Sorry for the long post but has anyone else had any similar lameness or know what it might be?

And i know im thinking ahead too much but im really worried I'll have to retire him, ive had him since a 6month old so couldnt rehome him or get rid but it would be a shame if i couldnt ride or compete any more :(

He is insured with PetPlan so thats one worry off my mind but he is my baby :(

Have a talk with your farrier as more could be going on, also if your horse keeps going lame as I had with my second horse asked for a blood test for cushings, the vet said she did not think my horse had cushings as did not look like a cushings horse, guess what tests came back positive, just had this feeling especially as the horse wanted to eat oak leaves now oak is used in the homoeopathic tablets to treat cushings.

Thanks Kevin, he is insured so i'll ask for blood tests as well. He's happy in himself and sound when out grazing, its just when trotted on concrete or on the lunge he comes up lame :(

The problem is I am paranoid unfortunately about Cushings, which is not really as bad as it sounds as it can be managed as I did for 15 years with Tonka. I had some success with Homoeopathic tablets which were 200C Acth / Quercus Rhobur this came about as at that time in the early days the tablets from the vet were in short supply and the only ones available were for humans. Tonka lived till he was 30 years old and it was the result of Ragwort eaten 30 years previous as a foal causing liver and kidney problems which effected the skin. Lara a rescue an ex-racehorse unfortunately died nearly 12 months ago with a twisted gut nothing could be done for her. Another big problem is the Insurance companies don't insure anything inside the horse after 16 years old always injuries and was told by the vets better to save your money for the bills and for 3rd Party Insurance join BHS as a Gold Member, unfortunately last year had an £800 bill and no horse so what do I do go and buy another horse this time a Belgian Warmblood Mare who is accident prone, I never learn.

Haha, I couldn't imagine not having a horse now, so I dont blame you for buying another  :)

Boyz is 16 but his policy still covers him for everything thank god! I only pay £28 a month so considering the xrays, ultrasound and nerve blocks alone are going to rack up hundreds of pounds I think ive got a pretty sweet deal, and only £135 excess :)

Re: So worried, strange lameness... :(

I actually have had a similar problem with my three year old filly ... she had two absesses in a short space of time and then was sound. This week she went lame again, no heat or swelling in the leg or heat in the foot, lame when trotted up on concrete and when lunged ... vet visited said it's most likely bruising. Suggested I have her shod, no box rest required. One thing she did say was that these can take a while to heal so we're booked for the farrier this week and then we've just to wait it out. She suggested that due to the absesses the foot is now more sensitive ... I was also worried as it was nothing obvious and it seemed to come and go in severity also, so perhaps your horse has a similar problem and it will just take time to improve? It is a good idea, as Kevin suggested to have the full blood tests done just to rule out anything more serious and put your mind at ease, it's horrible when they aren't well, so worrying.

Well he went to the  vets and was competely sound! Little bugger.

Anyway, he had xrays done and turns out his pedal bone is flat to the ground rather than at a 5degree angle, so his heel sinking has put tension on his flexor tendons. With supplements, remedial shoeing and controlled exercise he should make a full recovery :D im soo happy! He had his shoes on yesterday and should be able to have a little ride before the weekend :)
