This is my Dilema, Buzz is a sweet heart, he is very non agressive and a gentle soul, Winnie really likes him and Barney seemsto aswell, the have met over the stable door and over the fence, both times I had buzz on a head collar and ladrope and Barney was free to take his own time meeting him. Barney is a little monster and is terrorising Winnie, I think he needs some more to look at and an older horse to teach him to be a horse as Winnie is just 4yo and lets him get away with everything!

Yes, absolutely.  Turn out with another horse is very good for socialising the foal.  My friend runs a stud and each year she has the foaled mares in with others who are "resting" so there are usually about 4-5 mares with foals at foot in a herd of around 10-12 all together.  They quickly learn manners and they often have great fun together.  There will be a bit of inquisitiveness at the start but after initial introductions they will settle down fine.  I got my filly when she was just 4 months old at weaning, (she's now 3) and I put her out with our cob gelding first of all, then I added in our warmblood who was the one I had concerns about as he's very boisterous.  Our cob became nanny and chief protector and our warmblood was the greatest playmate on earth as mentally he was the same age as the filly!  They are now a very tight little bunch and the filly is just spoilt rotten by both of them - she really is a princess.

Just try as the older horse should teach manners as in a herd where there would be a big mixture of ages all together, thats before us humans got involved.

Take it easy. JJ "met" an older gelding and the two mares. He was  9 months and was being taken to finish weaning. The gelding was ok for a bit meeting over the fence and stable doors etc, but initial meeting in the field JJ was turned on, got trapped in a corner , the gelding was "protecting" his mares and JJ tried to jump a barbed wire fence and got caught in it. He got cut free and was ok. Just be aware. It will probably be fine as Barney is going out with his mum too. Just giving you a heads up thats all. Good luck . xxx
