Weight tips please!

I don't come on her often but does any one have tips for getting weight off a horse and keeping it off?

With all the rain we have gotten the grass has shot up and Penny has balloned out. Dad and I are worried about laiminities(sorry about spelling)as she has a lot of stored fat on the crest and back but she has never had it before. She is in at night, on a smaller section of the field(with some hay to keep her going) during the day and we try to ride her 5-6 times a week for atleast an hour. She is fit but fat :( . Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks

T

Well you sound as if you're doing all the right things anyway, but if there's a lot of grass why are you giving her hay during the day? If there's enough for her to nibble on it should be enough I would think.

The other possibility is a grazing muzzle - a lot of people swear by them, but personally I would never use one again after seeing our old gelding put up a hind foot to get one off, and I was terrified he would get his foot caught!! So if you do get one stay with her for a while after you've ut it on to see if she's ok with it.

If she gets feed at all, put a half teaspoon of cinnamon in with it - it's a thing diabetics use, and I've used it on laminitics and a Cushings sufferer, it helps the body divert sugar away from the blood stream, so will help lessen the possibility of laminitis.

Good luck!!

I read something on the laminitis trust/org (?) website which suggested you are better off leaving them out but on bare grazing (that way they can eat something but very little AND they're still mobile)  Our little Shettie we've got as company for my WB is on small areas of grazing.  If you feed hay, soak it for 24hrs first as that basically strips it of calories (sadly goodness too) and helps keep their gut moving which is very important.  Muzzles work well for some...my friend's mare has hers on from about April to September inclusive - she's well covered but not roly poly like she was so she manages quite well with it.

Re: Weight tips please!

Hi, I have a Welsh Sec D who gains weight very easily ! We have sectioned our paddock off into several small paddocks so in the morning he goes into the one with hardly any grass, he has a very small amount of hay in a tub just to get him going and then at around 11 am he goes into another paddock with good grass. Usually my OH brings him in at around 3pm for an hour or so before I arrive to groom and ride him, he enjoys a break in his stable especially if it's hot. He is stabled at night with one large hay net.

If you have to feed hay try soaking it for several hours beforehand to remove the sugars. I do understand how you feel as it can be a bit of a battle with good doer's ! Basically you will need to restrict his grazing and if you would rather not use a muzzle then try putting him in a bare paddock for a few hours per day. Good luck, keep us updated on his progress X

I muzzle 3 out of 4 of my horses for the entire summer, its the only effective way for me, I've tried fencing off paddocks, bringing in during the day, none of it worked for me.

I probably should have mentioned that fact that she bits muzzles off! Lol shes such a pain for doing stuff like that.:) And she gets a small amount of hay during the day as the section she is on the grass is minumin due to her eating it all down its the rest of the field that is over flowing with grass. :( Thanks for the  cinnamon tip garyandbay ;)
